William Jackson Byrd, also known to his family and friends as "Jack," passed away at home at age 75.
Jack was known to his 3 children as "papa-bear" and "papa" to his two grandchildren as well as
"McGuyver" to his wife. Jack was born in Mena, Arkansas on December 6, 1944, to Verna Jackson and
Ethel Mae Byrd. A couple of years later his family relocated and settled in the small mining town of
Superior, Arizona in 1947. This is where Jack remained until his death, on October 28, 2020. Jack was
educated in Superior schools and later as a young man found work in the Prescott and Phoenix areas
after which he later returned home to Superior and got a job at Clayton Motors. In August of 1965, he
enlisted in the U.S. Army, and in August of 1971, Jack was honorably discharged and returned back to
Superior after serving overseas in Okinawa. In 1972, he met and and married Sandra (Sandy) Lee
Bergman and the couple decided to build lives together in the town of Superior to which they fondly
referred to as the "Pearl of the Pinals" where they built their home and raised 3 daughters. Jack found
employment with the Magma Copper Company and worked as a heavy equipment operator until the
company shut down in 1983. In December of 1983, he went to work at the Arizona Department of
Corrections as a Corrections Officer for 20 years until his retirement in 2004. Jack was known as an avid
outdoorsman and early on was a member of the Saddle Club and Sportsmans Club. Jack always had an
admiration for the great outdoors, shooting, hunting and fishing, as well as spending time exploring
Arizona and all it's beauty either with his old horse, Bonehead or four-wheeling with family and friends.
Jack was a "dog lover," raising and training Weimaraners over his lifetime. Jack was a devoted family
man who was more than a wonderful provider for his family and a loving husband to his wife Sandy for
over 48 years.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Robert Leon Byrd and Jerry Dean Byrd.
Jack was survived by his wife Sandra, daughters; Susan Byrd, Carol Soto (Hector), and Amy Byrd
(Curtis); his brother John G. Byrd (Sheila of Buena Park, California)and sister Rose Bingochea (Joe),
and brother-in-law John Bergman who he considered like a son. Jack is also survived by his
grandchildren Alejandro and Aliyah Soto along with mulitiple cousins, nephews, and neices.

As per his wishes no funeral will be planned, but a memorial service will be held at a later date.
